What are the steps to adopt a pet at NRAS?

Are you ready to have a pet?

Owning a pet is a huge responsibility. Are you and your family ready for it? Consider if you have enough space, time and budget for it. View our “Are you ready for a pet checklist” if you need some guidance.

Complete our Questionnaire

In order to adopt an NRAS animal, you must first complete an adoption questionnaire which will be reviewed and assessed by the NRAS team to match animals with suitable adoptive families.

Meet & greet

You will be contacted to arrange an appointment for a meet & greet.

Note: While some of our animals are in emergency care at our Rescue Shelter, the majority are in loving foster homes, where they remain with their foster carers until a permanent, loving home becomes available.

NRAS hosts a regular ADOPTION DAY  on the 1st Saturday of the MONTH however meetings and adoptions can take place during our Shelter operating hours, weekdays 10:00am – 4:00pm or by a specific “out of hours” appointment.

Adoption Questionnaires
How our database works

Sometimes, people have specific preferences when searching for a pet, such as a particular gender, colour, or energy level. However, it's not always guaranteed that we have animals that align with these exact specifications at the moment. For this reason, we invite individuals to complete our Adoption Questionnaires, which are securely stored in our database for six months. By doing so, once an animal that fits their criteria becomes available, we can promptly notify them and prioritise their consideration.

Prior to adoption

Before finding their forever homes, all our animals go through a comprehensive care routine to ensure their well-being and readiness for adoption. This includes:

  • Vet Checked
  • Parasite Treated
  • Microchipped
  • Vaccinated
  • Desexed

Free lifetime Registration for Rescue pets

From July 2021, the Companion Animals Regulation 2018 was amended so that NO REGISTRATION FEE is payable for a companion animal that is desexed and purchased (adopted) via a “re-homing organisation”. Registration of your companion animal can be done at your Local Council or at:  www.petregistry.nsw.gov.au
